Senior centers, the village movement, and aging in place have become well established in the Greater Washington region. Your local senior center or senior services agency is a great place to learn what is available. In addition, your county department on aging has the latest information available. In addition, the Washington Area Village Exchange (WAVE) has a great list of villages in the region. Over 75 villages are organized in the area.
Villages help permit seniors to “Age in Place” and live on their own safely for longer than was traditionally possible, and also promote intergenerational communication. Persons who are blind or visually impaired can benefit from these services as well. Villages are organized in different neighborhoods with volunteers in the community providing many services, such as transportation for groceries or medical appointments, light housework, daily check-ins, and social activities. Normally involve minor annual fees for village participation. Contact WAVE to find your village or start your own with their help.
