Guide: Phone/Computer Apps

Smartphones and computers have many built-in accessibility features, such as magnifiers, inverting colors, and speech to text. These are immensely helpful for persons with vision loss.

Dozens of phone and computer “apps” are available that improve accessibility and simplify use of devices for those with vision loss. Please note: The list below is not exhaustive – more than a hundred apps are available, and there are new ones every day. The apps listed are effective for many with vision loss. As with everything in this guidebook, you need to find which work best for you and your goals. Try free or low-cost options, which may be sufficient for your needs, first. You can find most all of these apps, and more, in the “App Store” or “Google Play Store” on your smart device or computer.

  • “Tech Talks” at local libraries and accessibility centers are a great place to learn and ask questions.
  • Call or schedule an appointment at the POB Low Vision Resource Center. The resource specialists can help identify what apps may be good for you.
  • Phone service carriers may provide free directory assistance and long-distance call discounts to blind and visually impaired customers. Call your provider to find out and apply.
  • Call the District of Columbia Public Library Center for Accessibility (202-727-2142) to learn about technology and what is available on a smartphone.
