Background

Suleiman Alibhai, O.D., F.A.A.O., is the Clinical Director of Vision Rehabilitation of the Prevention of Blindness Society of Metropolitan Washington and a fellowship-trained Low Vision optometrist with more than 30 years of experience.

After graduating from the University of Houston College of Optometry (UHCO), Dr. Alibhai completed a fellowship in vision rehabilitation at the Lions Vision Research and Rehabilitation Center of the Johns Hopkins Wilmer Eye Institute. He went on to direct Low Vision services at The Retina Group of Washington and the Inova Hazel E.R. Widner Low Vision Center, and later founded his own practice, Low Vision Services, PLC, serving patients in DC, Maryland, and Virginia. He has served as a Low Vision consultant to the National Eye Institute since 1998 and was an Instructor in Ophthalmology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry, a Diplomate of the American Board of Optometry, and has coauthored publications on Low Vision rehabilitation.

As Clinical Director, Dr. Alibhai oversees POB’s clinical services and provides Low Vision evaluations for patients living with eye diseases such as macular degeneration, glaucoma, and diabetic eye disease. Working with each patient's referring eye doctor, Dr. Alibhai helps patients pursue their goals by exploring strategies, visual aids, technologies, and local resources that support independence at home, work, or school. A longtime partner of POB, he served on its Medical Committee beginning in 2002 and received POB’s Professional Service Award in 2012.
