Federal and local libraries offer individuals with visual impairment a variety of resources and program to help them make the most of the information available to them.
The National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (NLS) offers a free national library program of braille and recorded materials. The NLS staff also selects and produces full-length books and magazines in Braille and on recorded disc and cassette.
Anyone who is unable to read or use standard printed materials because of temporary or permanent visual or physical limitations may receive these resources. NSL sends the reading materials and playback machines to eligible borrowers and they can be returned to local libraries by postage-free mail.
In addition, the NLS also produces music resources like large-print and braille books about music; large-print music scores; music appreciation cassettes; and instructional cassettes for piano, organ, guitar, and other instruments.
