EYEGLASSES PROGRAM
The Prevention of Blindness
Society of Metropolitan Washington (POB) provides over 4,500 pairs of new eyeglasses
each year to low-income and homeless persons in the D.C. area who need glasses
but cannot afford to pay for them.
POB’s program helps by providing new eyeglasses at a nominal cost.
POB does not provide eye
examinations; therefore, individuals interested in obtaining eyeglasses through
the program must have a current prescription for glasses (less than one year).
The eyeglasses clinic is
open on Tuesday and Thursday—by appointment only. The cost of eyeglasses is $30 - $50 depending
on health insurance and where the prescription was obtained. Additionally, the clinic is open on Monday,
Wednesday and Friday mornings from 9 – 11 a.m. for walk-ins (no
appointment necessary). The cost of
eyeglasses on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays will be $50 for single lenses.
Other options on the glasses may have an additional cost.
The eyeglasses program is administered at POB’s shop located at 2216 Rhode Island Avenue, N.E. Individuals seeking services should call POB’s Eyeglasses Clinic at (202) 269-0203 to schedule an appointment. Also, call the clinic to confirm hours prior to walking in.
